Baptisms

Baptisms

If you would like your child to be baptised (christened), please contact the vicar on 0161 775 2171, or call in at the vicarage. Normally, the vicar will try to visit you before the service to get to know more about you and your child, and to go through the service beforehand so that you know what to expect.

We have a baptism team, and a couple will also try to visit you before the service, again to get to know you and to tell you more about the church. They will also take down all the details of names, godparents and so forth which we need to fill in our church baptism registers.

Baptisms usually take place during the 10.30am Family Service on the 3rd Sunday of each month.

NB. From September 2011 this will change to either the 2nd or 4th  Sundays.

The service lasts about an hour. Photographs can be taken in church after the end of the service.

We will also invite you to come to the 1st Sunday of the month following the baptism, so that your child may be presented with their baptism certificate near the end of the service.

Godparents: there must be at least two, one of whom must be the same sex as the child. Three godparents is traditional, but sometimes there may be more. Godparents must have been baptised (christened) themselves.

There are no fees for baptisms.

‘Here we are washed by the Holy Spirit and made clean. Here we are clothed with Christ, dying to sin that we may live his risen life. As children of God, we have a new dignity and God calls us to fullness of life.’

Weddings

If one of you lives in Cadishead, there is every chance that you can get married in our beautiful church. Please contact the vicar on 0161 775 2171, or call in at the vicarage. Normally, the vicar will try to meet you a couple of times before the wedding to go through the service with you.

If one of you has been divorced, then a church wedding at St. Mary’s is still possible in some circumstances.
